Landscape Astrophotography from Western Australia.
23 March 2024
Dr John Goldsmith (Founder, www.celestialvisions.com.au)
John introduced his unique book “Visions of the Cosmos: Landscape Astrophotography from Western Australia”, celebrating the cosmos and iconic Western Australian landscapes. His third book is a collaboration with nine of WA’s leading astrophotographers, and presents majestic visions of the cosmos and wilderness landscapes, documenting more than two dozen iconic landscapes throughout Western Australia.
The extraordinary images are complemented by stories, insights and personal reflections on the wonders of the night sky and our ancient landscapes. This unique book is entirely conceived, photographed, authored, designed and produced in Western Australia.
Dr John Goldsmith is a Western Australian based astrophotographer, author and exhibition curator. He is a leading proponent of ethical astrophotography and leads collaborative based exhibition and astrophotography projects, having curated over 40 astrophotography exhibitions since 1999.
Dr Goldsmith featured in the international 5-part film series The Borderless Sky, The Aboriginal Sky of Australia (2017) and provided project guidance for the film Fireball, Visitors from Darker Worlds (2020) by Clive Oppenheimer and film-maker Werner Herzog.
The Western Australian Museum (Boola Bardip) engaged Dr Goldsmith to coordinate the Western Australia by Night permanent exhibit. His PhD research Cosmos, Culture & Landscape (2014) investigated Western Australian Aboriginal sky knowledge, with a focus on Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater. He is the creative developer behind Celestial Visions (www.celestialvisions.com.au).
